John Wainwright (1921-1995) est né dans le Yorkshire, à l'Ouest en Angleterre. Il quitte l'école à 15 ans, et s'engage dans l'aviation anglaise où il devient canonnier lors de la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Il a ensuite travaillé dans la police d'investigation, ce qui a nourri durablement son œuvre et donne un réalisme confondant à sa peinture des commissariats britanniques.
